Lenders not playing ball with Government’s 95% mortgages, homes chief warns

A letter written by Home Builders Federation (HBF) executive chairman Stewart Baseley has revealed that banks are not playing ball with the Government's 95% mortgage offer to kick-start the housing market. The letter dated 27 March - leaked to the Daily Telegraph - informed housebuilders that lenders have not "embraced the scheme as first envisaged" and that efforts were under way to "impress upon them to implement NewBuy as a matter of priority." Property ladder ‘has bottleneck’

Homeowners who cannot move up the property ladder into their second home are causing a "bottleneck" in the housing market, the Bank of Scotland has warned. Research found that two-thirds (65%) of those looking to buy their second home in the past year have been unable to do so. These so-called second steppers faced a number of barriers when looking to move. Meanwhile, three-quarters (76%) believe the Government should step in to help people trying to sell their first home. Most Scottish towns are affordable

The majority of towns and cities across Scotland are affordable for first-time buyers, according to the latest Bank of Scotland First-Time Buyer Review. The average house price paid by a first-time buyer in November 2011 was affordable for someone on average earnings - based on the ratio of the average house price to earnings being below the long-term average of 4.0 - in 77% of all local authority districts in Scotland. Housebuilder Persimmon Homes gets £20 million Affordable Rent cash

Housebuilder Persimmon has signed the largest private sector developer contract with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to date as part of the Government’s Affordable Homes Programme. It will be allocated more than £20 million to build nearly 2,000 homes across England. Other private developers that have already secured Government cash as part of the programme are Dunelm Accord Homes and Jessup Brothers with £8.6 and £3.6 million respectively. NAEA 2012 property market predictions

The National Association of Estate Agents today revealed itspredictions for the UK property market over the next 12 months. NAEA chief executive Peter Bolton King said 2012 will see a ‘gradual’ recovery for the UK property market, as it continues to bounce along the bottom – with no “great upturn” to mark a change from the previous 12 months. Optimistic potential house buyers believe that property prices will not fall in 2012, defying the current economic gloom and turmoil which blankets the UK. UK residential property prices in the three months to November were 0.6% lower than in the preceding quarter and down 0.9% on a monthly basis according to the latest figures to be published today (Tuesday 06 December). The data from the Halifax shows that the underlying market trend was negative for the second successive month following three consecutive increases. Ikea floored by housing slowdown as sales drop 3%

FLAT-PACK giant Ikea has vowed to keep slashing prices – despite suffering a drop in sales. The Swedish furniture firm’s UK arm saw takings fall 3% to £1.15billon in the 12 months to September. The decline came in spite of Ikea cutting its prices by 5% across the store to appeal to cash-strapped shoppers.
